This handbook guides you through every step of offering peer coach training, from planning to promotion to leading the sessions. The Facilitator's Guide is sold separately here for occasions when you need extra Guides but not the other resources in the Facilitator's Package. The Facilitator's Guide includes:

  • An overview of the training process
  • Promotional resources for recruiting people and getting them on board
  • A complete checklist of everything you need to get the course off to a great start
  • Facilitator's outlines for all eight sessions plus the orientation
  • Schedules for offering the training in different formats to fit your needs
  • Tips on facilitating the sessions and leading debriefings
  • A refocusing section with resources to keep peer relationships running effectively long-term

Training Formats

Peer Coach Training includes an orientation plus eight 60- to 75-minute sessions. You have several choices for format. The preferred method is a nine-week class (eight sessions plus the orientation). If you want to get started with a bang, a schedule is provided for doing the training as a half-day workshop plus five weekly sessions. These materials can also be used to offer basic coach training only, without the peer relationship component - a great option for training small group or cell coaches. Your people can learn coaching skills from a master coach trainer without the expense of bringing in an outside facilitator.

To make this guide easy to navigate, special text formatting is used to separate out things you need to say to the group from notes that are just for you. A system of icons highlights the key points and helps you find your place quickly when you are leading the group. We've also keyed each important concept or principle that is presented into the acclaimed how-to-coach book, Leadership Coaching (it's included in the Peer Coaching Facilitator's Package). You'll always have a wealth of background information on coaching right at your fingertips, so you'll feel confident and prepared as you go into each session.

Building a Peer Coaching System

The goal of peer coaching training is not to fill a slot in your course schedule, but to give you a lasting structure for relational accountability that can help your people keep growing long after the initial training is over. To this end, the Facilitator's Guide includes a whole section of follow-up resources to help you maintain your peer relationships after the training is over. If you are committed to peer accountability, the exercises for reinforcing the peer coaching vision, periodic refocusing and recommitment ceremonies, sharing growth testimonies and for incorporating new members will help you build a lasting peer coaching system.

While peer coach training is designed for groups, if you want to keep the peer relationships going long-term, you'll need a way to incorporate new people. The Facilitator's Guide includes instructions for multiplying groups from pairs to triads and back to pairs again. It's a great way to bring newcomers into significant relationships quickly - and that's the most effective way to turn visitors into members. This is a great way to get people on board that missed the group training, or to build a peer relationship for yourself if group training is not available.
